Open Top

Open tops are special containers with an open roof, designed for the transportation of over-height cargo or cargo that must be loaded by crane from the top.

1. Over-Height (OH) Criteria for Open Tops

① Void Space and Freight Calculation
Freight rates for out-of-gauge (OOG) cargo include charges per TEU for void space created as a result of out-of-gauge conditions.
The criteria used to determine out-of-gauge conditions for void space calculation are established in accordance with each carrier’s internal standards.

②  Variables Considered at the Quotation Stage
Until cargo is fully stuffed into the open top container and lashing is completed, it is not possible to definitively determine whether the cargo or lashing materials will protrude beyond the container boundaries.
Accordingly, at the freight quotation stage, estimated void space should be calculated by considering the following variables:

• Changes in final packing dimensions
• Protrusion of lashing materials
• Increase in cargo height due to installation of floor dunnage

③ Common Dimensional Criteria Applied for Quotation
While detailed standards may vary slightly by carrier, the following dimensional thresholds are commonly applied at the freight quotation stage:
