3. UN/LOCODE
UN/LOCODE (United Nations Code for Trade and Transport Locations) is a five-character international location code administered by UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe).
- Scope: Covers all major international logistics locations, including Seaports, Airports, Inland Container Depots (ICDs), Rail terminals
- Structure: Two-letter country code + three-letter location identifier (Example: KRPUS – Busan, Republic of Korea)
- Usage: Bill of Lading (B/L), Customs declarations, Identification of POL (Port of Loading) / POD (Port of Discharge), Booking documentation
4. SMDG Terminal Code
If UN/LOCODE identifies a city or port as a macro location, the SMDG Terminal Code identifies a specific terminal facility within that port.
- Governing Body: Maintained by SMDG (Ship Message Design Group), the global maritime EDI standards organization
- Key Features: Codes are distributed via the Terminal Partner List (TPL)
- Structure: Either appended to a UN/LOCODE or managed via a separate mapping table (Example: KRPUSKBCT – BPT Terminal in Busan)
- Usage: Used in terminal-carrier EDI messages such as: BAPLIE, COPRAR, COARRI
| Cartegory | UN/LOCODE | SMDG Terminal Code |
|---|---|---|
| Governing Body | UNECE (United Nations agency) | SMDG |
| Identifies | Geographic locations (port, city, airport, ICD) | Specific terminal/operator within a port |
| Primary Documents | B/L, Cargo Manifest | BAPLIE, MOVINS, TDR, and other EDI messages |
| Data Perspective | Commercial perspective (transport leg identification) | Operational perspective (actual working terminal location) |
